Many years ago, gemstones were believed to possess supernatural powers and even today in our society which relies heavily on science there are people who still believe that gemstones have certain powers. For many people, the meaning of emerald is as a birthstone for those who were born in the month of May. In astrological terms, emerald is the gemstone associated with the Signs of the Zodiac Cancer, Taurus and Gemini. It is also traditional to give emerald as a gift to mark the 20th, 35th and 55th wedding anniversaries.
There are those who believe in the power of emerald to heal the heart, and that when there is a full moon the stone has its greatest healing power. It is also believed by some people to have the power to heal the eyes, lungs, muscles and spine.
